BMW has changed its key system several times. Older cars use EWS; most models from the mid-2000s to the mid-2010s use a CAS module (CAS1 to CAS4); and newer F- and G-series cars use FEM or BDC. The system decides how a new key is coded, so the model and year matter more than the shape of the key. Comfort Access cars add keyless entry on top.
